On the other hand, the opposite pole would be "rational optimism". That where one is aware that positivity, by itself, will not produce change. To be an optimist is above all to have perspective, to not be discouraged by failure or the thoughts of defeat that tend to emanate from it.
It is also important to know that optimism is a bias/attitude that is built. In fact, our brain has a natural tendency to direct our attention to possible external threats that may compromise our survival. Optimism, therefore, is trained and worked on daily by strengthening our character, learning from setbacks and knowing how to manage our emotions in those difficult moments that we all, sooner or later, have to face.
How to be optimistic in difficult timesOptimistic people are not necessarily naГЇve. It is true that many of them practice this empty positivity, in which they limit themselves to taking a deep breath and trusting, without ceasing to be spectators at any moment of what happens to them; however, many other people transfer this positivity to action. We say this because it is very common to have a mistaken idea of what optimism is and what it implies: in the second case, we are facing a psychological dimension of such value that it deserves the efforts we devote to grow in it.
The "American Psychological Association" conducted a survey a few years ago to assess the impact of the current social and economic crisis on the general population. From this scale, interesting and useful data were obtained. It was discovered that women are the most affected group. They are also the ones who experience more psychological symptoms: stress, anxiety, headaches, fatigue, eating disorders...
In a world in crisis, the inequality of salaries and job opportunities is particularly hard on the female gender, which is why it is necessary to address this problem from many different angles.
The "American Psychological Association" wanted to find out, secondly, what strategies were used by those women who had managed to cope with a complex moment, to gradually position themselves in a position of relevance or power.
Resilient optimismWhen these women explained all these daily coping mechanisms they used, psychologists labeled this set of dynamics under the term "resilient optimism". It would no longer be the rational optimism that Seligman spoke of at the time. In fact, it would now be necessary to go a step further. We are at a time when it is necessary to integrate new psychological strategies with which to stay afloat in these difficult times. These would be the following:
Remain faithful to those ideas on which we have reflected and in which we believe today.
Accept negative emotions: listen to their message and intelligently manage the energy they endow us with.
To understand that to live is to go through various experiences, many of which are not going to be positive or pleasant.
Difficult moments should be seen as challenges from which to start, from which to learn in order to move forward.
Combine tenacity with resilience, motivation with practicality, creativity with opportunity.
Also, consider that many of us live in environments where pessimism dwells. If we really want to develop resilient optimism, sometimes we need to change the scenery, reduce the impact these people have on us, or even move away....
Optimistic people, courageous peopleAnalyzed all these data we therefore come to more than one conclusion. The first is that all those friends or family members whom we consider optimistic by nature may not always have been so. Perhaps they learned to be so and struggle daily to maintain this perspective, this vital approach that we like so much and that we sometimes take too much for granted.
On the other hand, it is necessary to assume that the most logical, most resilient and rational optimism also has its moments of weakness. In fact, there are many people who have gone through depression because they thought they were too strong, thinking that optimism covered them with a layer of invulnerability, like a real super-hero: capable of meeting every need and every obligation. When in reality, even the bravest has his weak point, his kryptonite.
Therefore, let us try to have a more useful vision of positivism. Let us understand that the optimist does not harbor resentments or grudges, does not avoid the challenges of the present and accepts that adversity exists and must be faced. Optimistic people surround themselves with good friends, know how to be grateful and forgive, and above all make use of that courageous and resilient attitude: a kaleidoscope that draws confidence in the future towards which they look.
